December travel destinations with enchanted Christmas marketplaces, 2022

It's that time of year again when everyone starts getting in the holiday spirit with string lights, mulled wine, mistletoe, candy canes, and, of course, those infamous Christmas markets. There is no better way to get into the holiday spirit than by visiting one of the many cities worldwide that transform into winter wonderlands as Christmas nears. Visitors come from far and wide to experience the European-style markets, where they can take in the scent of freshly baked goods, listen to choral performances, and sip on a mug of mulled wine.

Basel – Switzerland

One of the first places we visit for the Christmas market is a beautiful city on the Rhine. Basel's historic district comes alive with holiday markets and kiosks throughout the holiday season. The ancient squares of Münsterplatz and Barfüsserplatz are beautiful year-round, but they take on an especially magical quality during the holiday season.

Belfast – Northern Ireland

Like the rest of Ireland, Belfast is known for its good spirits and beer. A variety of foods, trinkets, and knickknacks, as well as loads of alcohol, will be sold at the various booths. The market is so festive that it almost begs to be photographed, with its own helter-skelter and life-size snow globe.

Edinburgh – Scotland

It's no secret that the Scots love a good party, and around the holidays in Edinburgh, they really go loose. The capital city is where you want to go in the days leading up to Christmas since the cobblestone streets, old buildings, and cool weather provide the ideal festive backdrop. This market spread throughout East Princes Street Gardens' numerous stories, is among Europe's longest.

Budapest – Hungary

The Budapest Christmas Market is widely considered one of the most beautiful marketplaces in Europe, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors every year. Attend the Advent Feast of the Basilica in Szent István-Bazilika to learn who won the 2019 European Christmas Market of the Year award. For an alternative, visit Vörösmarty Tér, the site of one of the biggest and oldest Hungarian Christmas Markets, to sample some authentic Hungarian food.

Innsbruck – Austria

Examine the old, sentimental, and merry Christmas spirit of Innsbruck. The Christmas market is a sight to see among picturesque mediaeval structures and the iconic Golden Roof. Stylish Christmas trees, handcrafted ornaments, and delectable treats may all be found here. The brass bands playing from the Golden Roof create a dreamlike atmosphere as you wander the markets.
